Description

Basalt rock dust is a finely ground powder derived from basalt, a dark volcanic igneous rock formed from cooled lava or magma. It serves as a natural soil amendment, rich in essential macro- and microelements like silica, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, and trace minerals in proportions mimicking natural soil compositions. Composition Typically contains 45-52% silica (SiO₂), 5-12% magnesium oxide (MgO), around 10% calcium oxide (CaO), 5-14% iron oxides, and smaller amounts of aluminum, titanium, potassium, and trace elements. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, it lacks nitrogen and phosphorus but provides slow-release minerals through weathering. ​ Production and Use Produced by grinding basalt rock to a fine particle size (often 100µm or less), often as a byproduct of quarrying for aggregates. Applied to depleted soils to remineralize, enhance microbial activity, improve nutrient uptake, strengthen plant cell walls via silica, and support long-term fertility without overdose risks.
