Description

Gypsum CaSO4 2H2O is a soft, naturally occurring sulfate mineral widely used in construction (drywall, plaster), agriculture (soil conditioner), medicine (casts), and industry, valued for its ability to absorb water, provide fire resistance, and improve soil structure by breaking up clay and adding calcium and sulfate. It's mined globally, often as a byproduct of other processes, and transforms into Plaster of Paris when heated, enabling its diverse applications. Key Characteristics Chemical Formula: CaSO4 2H2O (calcium sulfate dihydrate). Appearance: White to greyish, can form translucent crystals (selenite) or fibrous masses (satin spar). Hardness: Soft, with a hardness of 2 on the Mohs scale. Common Uses -Construction: Main ingredient in drywall (plasterboard), plasters for smooth finishes, joint compounds, and fire-resistant materials. -Agriculture: Soil conditioner to improve aeration in clay soils, reduce sodium toxicity, and provide calcium and sulfur. -Medicine: Used to create plaster casts for broken bones (though fiberglass is now common). -Industry: In cement, toothpaste, food additives, and as a water treatment in brewing.
